Vi knows the Rule: Girls don’t walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn…and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi’s future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.
But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they’re set on convincing Vi to become one of them…starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi can’t leave Zenn in the Thinkers’ hands, but she’s wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous–everything Zenn’s not. Vi can’t quite trust Jag and can’t quite resist him, but she also can’t give up on Zenn.
This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.
This is an interesting book. Originality as its best. The concept is unique, the characters are amazing and the plot is fantastic!
I’ve never read a book like this before and the messages I got from reading this just blew my mind. Possession explores the subject of control and freedom. Johnson expresses her opinions on it so intricately and cleverly that I can’t even process this book! (In a good way, guys, in a good way! 😛 ) It made me think, it made me question our world entirely.
The blurb doesn’t even do the book justice; this is more than a love triangle. This book is more than Vi having to choose between Zenn and Jag. So, if you were thinking of reading this book and thought otherwise because of the love triangle, you are making a huge mistake. And this is coming from a hater of love triangles.
This book is not what it seems to be. From the first page, Johnson drew me into Vi’s world. It was like the book came alive before my eyes. This happens to me to most books but reading Possession was different. I don’t know how to explain but the book just sucked me in… This is why this novel stands out to me.
The plot was well-paced, and really different. There were obvious plot twists but there were plot twists that were like, How did I not see that coming?? My emotions were all over the place while reading this book too. Moments between Jag and Vi were just so sweet and romantic and others were like NOOOOOOOOO! There was also a few jaw-dropping moments as well! This book had everything! I was pretty impressed because I think Possession was Elana Johnson’s debut novel. (It might be, I really don’t know.)
Vi is a “Free Thinker”. She thinks for herself and knows what she likes or doesn’t like. This is a great quality I love in my characters, but in her world, it’s rebellious and it’s a crime. (What would it be like for us to have no right to opinion and freedom? The fact that countries out there don’t let their citizens have freedom of speech and opinion is heart-breaking and absolutely not okay.) Because of this world, Vi’s characteristics are highlighted and they really stand out. Vi is independent, snappy, and stubborn. It’s kinda great! She was a pleasure to read about!
Jag is a very magnetic character. I loved him the moment he made an appearance in the book. He’s Vi’s peanut butter to his jelly. Her yang to his yin. They complemented each other in personality, with him being an actual Rebel. He’s also independent and stubborn. Their chemistry was amusing to read about. Jag really impacts Possession through his influence to Vi, and his participation in rebelling against the government.
There are many terms one must know while reading Possession. The people are categorized two ways. You can either be a “Goodie” or a “Baddie”. Vi is a Goodie, and Jag is a Baddie. The label you get also depends on where you live and your way of living. You can obviously tell which is better to be.
This is not only a YA dystopia, but Possession has undertones of supernatural abilities. I won’t name anyone but this book can be placed in the supernatural genre. I will always be a fan of the paranormal and supernatural genre and having this on top of great characters and an interesting plot was amazing!!
I recommend this book to those who like action and romance, with a side of supernatural abilities. If you like Shadow Falls by C.C Hunter and Nightshade by Andrea Cremer, you will like this book as well.
Well, I kind of half-assed this review, so I promise I’ll write a better one for you guys next time!
Keep calm and read on!
