Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king’s army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince’s guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can’t prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she’s sworn to protect?

four star

Four “Badass” Stars

When I first picked this book up to read I didn’t think I would like it as much as I do now.

“Defy” is about a young heroine who had to disguise as herself as a boy to survive a long-raging war between two regions. Alex, or Alexa, is a character I fell in love with immediately; she is fierce, determined and completely badass by beating lots of men in sword-fighting.

Her story is well written and very tragic. Larson wasn’t shy when killing off characters in this novel and no matter how sad I was about these deaths, they were well plotted and proved to make the readers more attached to certain characters. (One death in particular)

I love the fighting scenes in this novel, I wasn’t confused and it was easy to visualize and know what was going on. Very entertaining to read!!!

The romance/relationships with the main character, Alex/Alexa was the reason why I couldn’t give this book 5 stars. Yes, it was sweet and I am Team Damian all the way, but SERIOUSLY?!?! A FLIPPING LOVE TRIANGLE?!?!

As you probably already noticed from the synopsis, there is a love triangle in this book!!! This frustrated me so much in the book!! Not being a fan of love triangles, reading “Defy” wasn’t as great as it could have been. BUT, the action and plot and everything else made up for this horrible mistake resulting in me getting the next book pronto!!

Soo, if you like adventure, sword-fighting, a badass heroine, and a sweet budding romance this is the book for you!!
